What We Do
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.
With one legal aid attorney to assist numerous potential clients in civil matters in the Louisville metropolitan area, the number of clients who need assistance can be overwhelming. We seek to bridge the justice gap by focusing on personalized legal service that depends largely on training clients to represent themselves. At our clinics, we provide the following legal services:
Legal “urgent” care services
Our attorneys and volunteers provide clients 45-60 minutes of free legal advice through office visits to our clinic locations. We address a client’s specific legal needs and if requested, address a client’s spiritual needs as well. Clients are educated as to their rights and trained on how to file court documents, prepare documents and pleadings and negotiate to protect their rights.
Referrals to other attorneys and legal organizations
We will generally refer clients to other approved attorneys and legal aid representations when clients need ongoing legal representation.
Consulting with Christian Nonprofit Organizations
We provide clients assistance in forming Christian nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations and provide guidance in the operation of those organizations. We charge a small fee for this service and the amount of the fee varies depending on whether the organization has a foreign aspect to the service being provided or proposed to be provided.
Conflict Resolution and Mediation Services
We provide conflict coaching to individuals or Christian organizations in conflict and if our coaching services do not result in resolution of the conflict, we offer parties mediation services. Our conflict coaching and mediation services are based on the principles espoused by Peacemaker Ministries and our goal is biblical restoration of the relationship between the parties. Several of our attorney volunteers have been trained through Peacemaker Ministries.
We offer education seminars to give clients an overview of their general legal rights in various areas of the law. These seminars may include topics such as expungement rights; tax preparation; immigration issues; estate planning; custody issues; conflict resolution; debtor – creditor issues; and landlord – tenant issues. We also plan to provide educational training for our attorney and paralegal volunteers to provide CLE approved seminars on areas of the law we experience most regularly at our clinics.
Metro Christian Legal Aid does not provide on-going legal assistance. We provide limited engagement legal assistance. We strive to educate most of our clients to handle their own legal matters.
Metro Christian Legal Aid is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation and we assist clients regardless of their religion, race, color, creed, national origin, ancestry, disability, gender, sexual orientation or age.
